(500) Days Of…. Sweet Beats?

February 8, 2010

(500) Days of Summer, starring indie king and queen Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel was released in theatres this past summer. Filled with great acting and an unpredictable plot, this film is not your average love story. However, as I sat in the overly air-conditioned movie theatre on a rainy July day, I could hardly pay attention to the movie. The soundtrack was far more captivating.

The 16-track compilation featuring artists such as Simon and Garfunkel, Black Lips, The Smiths and Regina Spektor is definitely worth the $7.99 price on iTunes. Off-topic, but here’s a fun fact about Regina Spektor- her family lives in the same apartment building as my grandparents in the Bronx, NY. My Grandma has met her a few times I believe. Spektor’s mailbox is pictured below. Not that I’m a stalker or anything…

Anyway, lets get back on track, shall we? (500) Days of Summer Director Marc Webb, a recognized music video director who has made videos for artists such as My Chemical Romance, Weezer and Green Day, made his film directorial debut with (500) Days of Summer.  Given Webb’s musical background, it only makes sense that music plays such a crucial role in the film. During an essential scene in the movie, Gordon-Levitt’s character, Tom, is listening to “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out” by The Smiths, on his iPod while riding in an elevator with Summer, Deschanel’s character, who overhears it and tells him that she loves The Smiths. This musical encounter is what initially sparked the flame between Tom and Summer.

Corny, but I love it when music brings people together.

Here are a few music videos of my favorite tracks from the soundtrack:

“Us”- Regins Spektor:

“Bad Kids”- Black Lips:

“You Make My Dreams”- Hall and Oats:
